Several woolen mills along the East Branch of the Sebasticook River contributed to a thriving textile industry in Dexter, Maine from the 1830s to 1970s. A city directory for Dexter in 1898 includes a listing for Amos Abbott & Co., Woolen Manufacturers, with the address of Church and Grove Streets; Job Abbott and George A. Abbott, proprietors.
